Evaluation

The objective of the assignment was to capture the formal element of tone through photography.  This was a interesting element to capture due to the fact that all objects contain different tonal aspects.  There was also an overlap between the formal element tone and the other formal elements due to the fact that all objects contain tone created by shadow.

Favorite image

1/440, f/3.6, ISO 200

This was my favourite image due to the way that the black and white filter that has been placed on the image helps to heighten the tonal aspects of the image.  I also like the way that the colour select around the arrow helps to maintain the boldness of the shape and draws the eye in whilst directing the eye to the subject who would otherwise blend into the dull landscape of the image.

Least favourite image

This is my least favourite image because I do not believe it accurately portrays the formal element of tone it may be more suited to the formal element of form.

Progression

For this formal element I encountered very few issues regarding the photography aspect itself as the element of tone did not require a particularly large zoom to achieve a good image this meant that a tripod was not necessary.  Unfortunatly however the weather was problematic and their was intermittent rain throughout the shoot.  The solution to this problem was to complete the shoot in the studio.

Aspirations
Joel Moritz's urban tonal work interests me and if I were to re-visit tone I would like to focus on his style.

Glossary

Photography terms:
Gamut- Range
Depth of field- The difference between the nearest and furthest options which creates a focal point on the part of the image which is focused opposed to blurred.

Camera parts:
Aperture- The opening hole in the camera that adjusts to let different levels of light in.
Shutter- The part of the camera which lets light in.
Shutter speed- The speed at which the camera opens and closes to allow the amount of light which is let in by the shutter.
ISO (International Standards Organisation)- Measure of sensitivity.

Print terms:

PPI- Pixels Per Inc.  Optimum pixels per inch is 72 for viewing on website.  Optimum pixels per inch is 300 for print.

DPI- Dots per inch.

Edit terms:
White balance-
Colour temperature-  Colours such as white can have different warmths the colder the colour the bluer the tone of the image and the warmer the image the more red the image.

Tone- Straight images

This image appeals to me because of the way that the arrow is central to the image and is pointing at the subject so is guiding the eye towards the subject.

I have used the colour select tool to turn the image black and white and keep the brighter yellow of the arrow to draw the eye in to the picture.  The black and white background also helps to bring out the different variations if tone in the image.

I like this image because of the way that the lighting adds tone and dimension.

I have altered this image by adding a black and white layer to the image and reducing the lightness of the image as well as giving the image a higher range of contrast to increase the tonal aspects of the image.

This image appeals to me because of the different tones created by the lighting and shadows as we,l as the variation in tone provided by the phones screen.

I have altered the image by adding a black and white filter to enhance the tonal aspects of the image which have been previously highlighted such as shadows and lighting.  I have also increased the contrast and reduced the lighting of the image.

This image appeals to me because of the way that the shadows and staged lighting provides a great deal of tonal variation through both light and shadow to give the image dimension.

I have added a red toned filter to the image as well as reducing the images saturation to show tone.

This image appeals to me because of the different tones of grey and blue which are displayed in both the feather and the concrete.

I have altered this image by adding a black and white filter and increasing the images saturation and contrast to enhance the tone of the image.

This image appeals to me as it is a tonal example of street photography which is one of my preferred genres of photography.  I also like the way that the converging lines of the road give the image a sense of depth, this sense of death is accentuated by the tonal contrast between the bright lights of the alleys end and the dark shadows of the tunnels walls.

I like this image because of the stark tonal contrast between the white highlights of the flower and the black background.  I find the way that the flower has been framed in a square interesting as it forces the viewers eye to look at the flower making it the images definite subject.

This image appeals to me because of the way that the different patterns of the water melons highlight the different tones created by shadow and lighting.  The fact that this image employs sepia tones to the image is also interesting as is the vignette on the image.

I like this image because of the contrast in tone between the foxs muzzle and legs, this contrast is made stronger by the black and white coloration of the image.  I also like the way that a shallow depth of field has been employed to draw the viewer's eye to the fox.

I like this image because of the tone created by the shadows and the contrast between the brightness of the metal and the dullness of the door.  I find the purple tone's in thus image interesting as they make the image more intriguing and contrast effectively with the cream tones.

I like this image because of the way that the variety of tones of colour give the image a wide tonal range despite the image not being in black and white.  The aspects of reflection and shadows are also interesting as they give the image a more engaging appearance.

Tone- Definition post

Dictionary definition- The lightness or darkness of something in reference to how light falls on a 3D object.
Personal definition- The difference in light of an image depending on how bright the light directed at the object.  Tone can be exhibited in both portraiture photography and nature photography.

Black and white / Greyscale- A photograph in black, white, shades of grey, and no other colour.



Tonal range- The range of tones between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. An image with a wide tonal range will have both Very dark (black) and very light (white) elements within the photograph.
