Low key lighting- Definition post

Dictionary definition-  a style of lighting for photography, film or television. It is a necessary element in creating a chiaroscuro effect. Traditional photographic lighting, three-point lightinguses a key light, a fill light, and a back light for illumination.
Personal definition- a mode of lighting using a snoot which directs light in a certain way to obscure parts of an image.

Dictionary definition- the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene.
Personal definition- The manipulation of an image to merge it with another.

Documentary- Definition post

Dictionary definition- a popular form of photography used to chronicle events or environments both significant and relevant to history and historical events and everyday life.
Personal definition- photography that catalogues a series of events.

Landscape- definition post

Dictionary definition- Landscape photography shows spaces within the world, sometimes vast and unending, but other times microscopic. Landscape photographs typically capture the presence of nature but can also focus on man-made features or disturbances of landscapes.

Personal definition- Landscape photography is any image that focuses on something which is not human or an animal.  A landscape image should also not be focused on one small object such as a flower but should encompass a large area or object e:g a park or mountain.

Scenic- providing or relating to views of impressive or beautiful natural scenery.

Industrial- relating to or characterized by industry.

Brutalism- an architectural style that emerged in the 1950s featuring monumental buildings, usually made of unornamented concrete, whose design was meant to project an air of strength and solidity.

Surrealism- a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality".

Portraiture- Definition post

Dictionary definition- a painting, drawing, photograph, or engraving of a person, especially one depicting only the face or head and shoulders.
Personal definition- an image which depicts a subjects face or head.

Candid- a photograph of a person taken informally, especially without the subject's knowledge.

Posed- to assume a particular position in order to be photographed, painted, or drawn.

Portraits can conform to old fashioned portrait formats such as being face on.

Or they can break away from traditional practices to create far more interesting but less standardised images which can form a more emotional connection with the viewer.

The second image has an element of mystery due to the fact that the subject is not looking directly at the camera like the subject in the first image is.

Personal definition-  An image which is assembled by creating a collage effect of several overlapping photographs.

Dictionary definition- the distance between the nearest and the furthest objects giving a focused image.

Personal definition- The distance between two or more objects in an image creating a range in focus.

Wide angle- In photography and cinematography, a wide-angle lens refers to a lens whose focal length is substantially smaller than the focal length of a normal lens for a given film plane.

Dictionary definition- The throwing back by a body or surface of light heat or sound without absorbing it.
Personal definition- The repetition of heat, sound or light as a result of not being absorbed.

Shape definitions
Dictionary definition- the external form, contours or outline of someone or something.  A geometric figure such as a square, triangle or rectangle.
Personal definition- The outline or form of a 2D or 3D object.


Silhouette- the dark shape and outline of someone or something visible in restricted light against a brighter background.

Negative space- the space between an object, around an object, but is not part of the actual object itself. It is the opposite of an identifiable object which can at the same time be used to help define the boundaries of positive space

Outline- a line or set of lines enclosing or indicating the shape of an object in a sketch or diagram.

Geometric- characterized by or decorated with regular lines and shapes.

Gamut- Range
Depth of field- The difference between the nearest and furthest options which creates a focal point on the part of the image which is focused opposed to blurred.

Camera parts:
Aperture- The opening hole in the camera that adjusts to let different levels of light in.
Shutter- The part of the camera which lets light in.
Shutter speed- The speed at which the camera opens and closes to allow the amount of light which is let in by the shutter.
ISO (International Standards Organisation)- Measure of sensitivity.

Print terms:

PPI- Pixels Per Inc.  Optimum pixels per inch is 72 for viewing on website.  Optimum pixels per inch is 300 for print.

DPI- Dots per inch.

White balance-
Colour temperature-  Colours such as white can have different warmths the colder the colour the bluer the tone of the image and the warmer the image the more red the image.

Dictionary definition- The lightness or darkness of something in reference to how light falls on a 3D object.
Personal definition- The difference in light of an image depending on how bright the light directed at the object.  Tone can be exhibited in both portraiture photography and nature photography.

Black and white / Greyscale- A photograph in black, white, shades of grey, and no other colour.



Tonal range- The range of tones between the lightest and darkest areas of an image. An image with a wide tonal range will have both Very dark (black) and very light (white) elements within the photograph.

Personal definition- a series of dots or lines which covers an object in either a regular or random formation.  Patterns can be both natural and man-made.

Colour definitions
Dictionary definition- The property possessed by objects which produces sensations on the eye depending on the way which the object emits or reflects rays of light.  
Personal definition- The hue or tone of an object.

Saturation- The intensity of a colour the more saturated the image the brighter the colours.

Hue- a colour or shade.

Value- the relative lightness or darkness of a colour.

Saturated colour- Colours which have an increased intensity.

Muted colour- Colours which have a reduced intensity.

Analogous colours- Groups of three colours which are side by side on the colour wheel.  Comprised of one primary colours, one secondary colour and one tertiary colour.

Complimentary colours- Colours which are on opposite sides of the colour wheel so make each other stand out.  When combined they can also make black or white.

Texture- Define

Dictionary definition- the feel, appearance or consistency of a surface or substance.

Personal defintion- the smoothness or jaggedness of an object.

Personal definition- a marking which connects two points.

Horizontal line- a line that follows the horizon and creates a tranquil feeling for the viewer.

Vertical line- a line that goes up or down and often symbolises power and strength.

Diagonal line- a slanted line that goes across the picture often creates imagery of movement and action.

Curved line- a wavy line that flows freely often represents quietness and is associated with sensual views.

Converging line- two lines which slant inwards and move closer together to create depth and draw the viewer into the image.

Leading line- any type of line which leads the viewers eye to something in the image.
